Joseph Gerdvil, 41, was being chased by police after he was accused of decapitating both his parents and mutilating their dog at their home in California.

Disturbing footage from an Orange County Sheriff deputy's bodycam shows Gerdvil storming towards the officer in the middle of the street with blood-stained clothes.

He is seen holding an unknown and suspicious object in his left hand while shouting at the armed deputy.

Gerdvil is ordered to get on the ground on several occasions before he is shot at from close range in the torso.

The first three bullets had little effect on the alleged murderer before a fourth pierced through him - dropping him to the ground.

Blood could be seen coming from his stomach and pouring onto the road.

A number of other heavily armed officers then arrive to San Juan Mobile Estates to handcuff the suspected killer.

The chilling arrest came moments after cops discovered the headless bodies of his two elderly parents - Ronald Gerdvil, 77, and Antoinette Gerdvil, 79, inside their mobile home nearby.

A mutilated dog was also found laying next to the couple.

Gerdvil, who has now been charged with double homicide, was intercepted after allegedly attacking a maintenance worker minutes after the sick decapitations.

Authorities battled with Gerdvil as he drove along a bike trail near Calle Arroyo in a golf cart before fleeing on foot.

He also launched a heavy shovel at police before they managed to fire at him, cops claim.

After being placed in handcuffs and given aid for his nasty gunshot wounds, Gerdvil could be heard speaking to the cops.

He told them: "Just finish me off. Put one in my head, please. I beg of you."

Before worryingly muttering to himself: "I love you. I'm sorry you're going to have to die."

He bizarrely then broke out into song as he started to say: "What's love got to do with it, got to do with it?

"What's love but a second-hand emotion?"

The iconic lyrics from the 1984 Tina Turner hit "What's Love Got to Do with It".

Gerdvil also went on to start the 1984 Stevie Wonder song "I Just Called to Say I Love You" as officers attempted to stop his bleeding.

Orange County Sheriff's Department managed to safely transport Gerdvil to a local hospital who stabilised him shortly after.

He has since been charged with homicide over the deaths of both his parents.

Cops are still investigating a possible motive for the brutal killings.

Neighbours for the Gerdvil family say they saw father Ronald in a heated argument with his son the day before the tragic events unfolded.

David Desmond told Fox 11 how Joseph "looked angry" as he confronted his father on July 8, as he got up "in his face".

Other neighbours say Joseph lived with his parents who were looking after him due to an alleged "drug issue".

Tributes were paid for the friendly and quiet couple in the days after the horror attack.

Nearby Tammy Pavese said: "The lady that lived there walked her dog all of the time in the neighborhood.

"Everybody knew who she was."

Victoria Alford described Antoinette and Ronald as a "very sweet couple".

"And at that age to tragically be murdered by your own son is just tragic, period," she added.

She also praised the maintenance worker as a "hero" for his efforts trying to stop Gerdvil.
