The Grimace Shake is purple and features a blueberry flavoured syrup blended with a creamy milkshake base.

The drink is inspired by the fast food chains' purple Grimace mascot, which was first introduced in the 1970s.

The fictional figure was initially an evil character who stole milkshakes from customers.

However, he later was rebranded as a more friendly cartoon.

There has been much speculation over what the Grimace actually does, with some believing he represents customers tastes buds.

A McDonald's spokesperson offered this clarification to People Magazine in April: "Whether he's a taste bud, a milkshake or just your favorite purple blob —the best part about Grimace is that he means different things to different people.

"Whatever he is, we're just proud our bestie makes people happy."

There are number of other McDonald's characters, who have featured in advertisements such as the Hamburglar and clown Ronald McDonald.

The drink will be hitting McDonald's more than 1,450 restaurants from August 28.

But you'll have to be quick as it's only for a limited time.

The Grimace Shake will only be available for one-week only, meaning you'll have to grab one before September 4.

The shake costs £2.69 for a medium size, while a large version of the shake is £2.99, though prices can vary depending on location.

The Sun has asked McDonald's how many calories are in the shake and will update this piece when we find out.

The drink is already available in the US and is a fan favourite on social media.

It was launched in the US last June as a limited edition menu item and then launched in Canada this past May.

For those in London on Monday August 26, they can get their hands on a Grimace Shake early by visiting Box Park Shoreditch from 12pm-6pm.

The launch of the drink in the UK is part of the brands 50th birthday celebrations.

Already the store has introduced a number of changes to its menu to mark the anniversary of its arrival in Britain.

This included the return of its Double Big Mac and a new Birthday Cake Donut, combining strawberry filling and buttercream-flavoured icing

Two new McFlurrys have also made their way to menus , such as the Milkybar Raspberry Ripple and Munchies Cookie Dough.

The news comes as fans of the fast food chain are also anticipating the return of McDonald's Monopoly.

The game will return on Wednesday, September 4, to the delight of fast food fans.

This means in just a few weeks time fans will have the chance to win hundreds of prizes including free food and money.

The competition will run for six weeks and end in October.

Just yesterday, The Sun shared with readers what prizes are up for grabs.

How to save money at McDonald's

You might not think it, but you can end up being charged more solely based on the McDonald's restaurant you choose.

Research by The Sun found a Big Mac meal can be up to 30p cheaper at restaurants just two miles apart from each other.

Meanwhile, you can pick up a Big Mac and fries for just £2.99 by filling in a feedback survey found on any old McDonald's receipt.

The receipt should come with a 12-digit code which you can enter into the Food for Thought website alongside your submitted survey.

You'll then receive a five-digit code which is your voucher for the £2.99 offer.
