FENCE PROTECTION: Help fences and other wooden structures survive through the cold and wet months by treating them with a stain or protective treatment to combat rot and mould.

There is currently ten per cent off Ronseal One Coat Fence Life at toolstation.com, taking it to £7.68.

COVER UP: Using a cover for outdoor furniture can help it last longer, protecting it from rust, mould or sun damage.

This will then need less maintenance and cleaning next year.

It may be an added expense that can cost as much as £50, but is usually less than the price of replacing your furniture.

Keep an eye on Amazon for bargains.

Prices can change, but we found a sofa cover for £11.

TAKE SHELTER: Now is the time to start moving potted plants into more sheltered positions to help keep them alive during winter frosts.

Walls near your home are typically warmer spots.

If you have ponds, cover them with netting to catch falling leaves that can spoil and clog the water.

PLANT BULBS: We may be coming towards the end of summer, but now is the time to plan if you want a garden filled with colour next year without having to buy bedding plants.

Dobbies garden centre buyer Nigel Lawton says: “Plant your bulbs in early September or October for the best chance of them blooming in spring.”

He adds that bulbs should generally be planted at a depth of three times their size to give them plenty of space to grow.

There is a three-for-£12 mix and match deal on selected bulb varieties at Dobbies, or bulbs start from £2.49 at Wilko
